Sherwood v St Nic’s Charity Match

Thanks everyone for supporting Sunday’s game.

Match Report from Ben Wildman: Sherwood FC 3 (Darke, Kenton 2) – 4 St Nic’s FC (Palmer, Riley 2, Wildman).

Our Sports Friends Malawi fundraiser took place at Radford FC today with many coming down to support the great cause and witnessing a 7 goal thriller!

St Nic’s prematch teamtalk focussed on what the day was all about – “changing lives and transforming communities.” Some inspiring stories were shared prematch to get the players ready for an epic afternoon.

St Nic’s started the better team with Rob Palmer opening the scoring with a header from a superb Sam Riley corner. Sherwood injected some flare into the game after 20 minutes bringing Darius McFarlane into the action who instantly impacted the game. It wasn’t long before Sherwood were level. Striker Jude Darke rolling back the years to run onto a through ball and calmed slot the ball past the keeper with his left foot.

After the half-time interval St Nic’s once again took the lead. This time through a Captain Riley header from a housemate Criag Johnson corner. Sherwood then scored what was undoubtably the finest goal of the match when they played the ball out of trouble to combine for an incredible team goal. The ball switching play and a number of players combining saw a ball crossed in for Joe Kenton to latch onto to make it level once again!

Sherwood’s midfield partnership of Nicholson and Sharp were strong and the pressure continued. A mistake from St Nic’s playing the ball out from the back saw Kenton again running through to finish well and see Sherwood take the lead for the first time.

St Nic’s responded with a number of chances and it was Riley once again played down the right who saw a shot saved before following up the rebound to net a brace.

The game was in the balance and St Nic’s midfield of Coates, Rainbow and newboy Andy Dilnot facing off against Stapleton, Nicholson and Sharp. A great number of physical battles for the crowd to watch and admire.

It was late in the game and nearly into stoppage time when St Nic’s wingback Johnson broke through and played a ball over to Sam Riley who knocked the ball down for event co-organiser Ben Wildman to control and lash home the winner with his right foot. Matthew Artis replaced the goal scorer and revealed he wanted to come on moments before but was pleased he waited a few minutes to see St Nic’s find the winner!

A fantastic game for a fantastic cause. The crowd were treated to seeing two Dilnots on the field and two Maples in the St Nic’s kit and 2 Tartis cameos. An absolute spectacle.

One huge thank you to Sherwood FC Simon Buttenshaw for all the organising! We can’t thank you enough and look forward to future games.
